CHIEFTAINCY DISPUTE IN EDO COMMUNITY.

BENIN—CRISIS is brewing in Okpella Kingdom, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State as the Oteku Sub-Clan/ruling house of the kingdom has asked an Edo State High Court sitting in Agenebode to declare that the headship of the clan rotates among two sub-clans of Ogute and Oteku ruling houses by virtue of the Edo State Traditional Rulers’ Law.
In the suit, Oteku sub-clan is also seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, Alhaji A. Dirisu from parading himself or holding himself out as a ‘king’ and presiding over ‘Okpella Kingdom.’
Claimants in the suit are Chief Charles Adogah, SAN, National President, Ukhuomunyio Community, Okpella; Dr Godwin Umoru, National President, Iddo Development Union, Okpella; Dr Ayuba Giwa and four others on behalf of Oteku Sub-Clan/ruling house.
The claimants, in a 30- paragraph affidavit deposed to by Mr. Edward Sado, averred that they “are natives of Oteku sub-clan which is one of the two ruling houses of Okpella by virtue of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law of Edo State.”
He averred that the two sub-clans, Ogute and Oteku rotate the rulership of Okpella one after the other and in turns.
They are praying the court to determine whether or not the Okuokpellagbe can operate outside the letter and content of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edit 1979 (as amended) to transmute himself into a King, ruling over Okpella Kingdom rather than clan head’ of Okpella clan.
They also want the court to determine “Whether or not he can amend the Edit (as amended) by removing the word ‘Clan’ used to describe Okpilla in the Edit/Law and substituting the word ‘kingdom’ as the defendant (Okuokpellagbe) now holds the Okpilla clan out to be.”                 SOURCE:VANGUARD
